Tiddly Winks: Background and How to Play

Background and History of Tiddly Winks

Tiddly Winks is a classic tabletop dexterity game that originated in England in the late 19th century. It became especially popular in the early 1900s as a parlor game enjoyed by both children and adults.

The game is simple but skill-based, requiring precision, timing, and control, which has allowed it to remain popular for generations. Competitive versions of Tiddly Winks even exist today.

Objective of Tiddly Winks

The goal of the game is:
👉 Score the most points by flicking small discs (winks) into the central pot.

Accuracy and strategy determine the winner.

Game Components

A standard Tiddly Winks set includes:

  • Small discs (“winks”) in different colors

  • One larger disc (“squidger”) used to flick the winks

  • A central cup or pot

  • 2–4 Players (or teams)

How to Play Tiddly Winks

1. Setup

  • Place the pot in the center of the table.

  • Each player chooses a color and receives an equal number of winks.

  • Players sit around the table at equal distances from the pot.

2. Taking Turns

On your turn:

  1. Place your squidger on top of one of your winks.

  2. Press down and flick the wink so it jumps into the air.

  3. Aim to land the wink inside the pot.

If successful, your wink remains in the pot.

3. Blocking and Strategy

  • You may flick your wink onto another player’s wink to cover it.

  • Covered winks cannot be played until uncovered.

  • This adds a strategic layer beyond simple accuracy.

4. Ending the Game

  • The game ends when all winks have been played or are in the pot.

  • Players count their scores.

Scoring

  • Each wink inside the pot scores 1 point.

  • In some versions, bonus points are awarded for clean shots or difficult placements.

  • The player (or team) with the highest score wins.

Tips for Beginners

  • Practice gentle flicks—control matters more than power.

  • Aim slightly high to allow the wink to hop into the pot.

  • Use blocking strategically to slow down opponents.

  • Keep your wrist relaxed.
