Dobble (Spot It!): Background and How to Play

Background and History of Dobble

Dobble is a fast-paced visual perception card game created by Denis Blanchot, Guillaume Gille-Naves, and Igor Polouchine, and published by Asmodee. It’s known internationally as Spot It!

The game became popular worldwide because of its simple rules, quick rounds, and exciting gameplay that appeals to kids, teens, and adults. Dobble is often used in schools to develop focus, quick thinking, and observation skills.

Objective of Dobble

The goal is simple:
👉 Be the first player to spot and name the matching symbol between two cards.

Speed and sharp observation are the keys to winning.

Dobble Game Components

  • 55 Circular Cards (standard version)

  • Each card has 8 different symbols

  • Any two cards always share exactly one matching symbol

  • Symbols vary in size and orientation, increasing the challenge

  • 2–8 Players (depending on the game mode)

How to Play Dobble

Dobble includes multiple mini-games, but all follow the same core rule:
Find the one identical symbol between two cards before anyone else.

Basic Game (Classic Mode)

1. Setup
  • Deal one card face-down to each player.

  • Place one card face-up in the center.

2. Gameplay
  • All players flip their cards face-up at the same time.

  • Players race to spot the symbol that matches the center card.

  • The first player to shout the correct symbol wins the round.

3. Winning
  • The winning player takes the center card.

  • A new center card is revealed.

  • The game continues until cards run out.

  • The player with the most cards wins.

Other Popular Dobble Game Modes

  • The Tower – Players race to get rid of their cards.

  • The Well – Cards are won and lost based on correct matches.
