Fasting for Spirit, Mind, and Body: My 9-Year Journey from January to April
Fasting for Spirit, Mind, and Body: My 9-Year Journey from January to April
Fasting has been part of my life for the past nine years. Every January to April, I commit to this practice — not for trends or show, but as a personal journey for spiritual, mental, and physical well-being.
Over time, fasting has shaped my life in profound ways. It has helped me grow spiritually, build discipline, and maintain my health — all without over-reliance on medications or frequent hospital visits.
Why I Fast
I began fasting for spiritual reasons. The Bible emphasizes fasting as a way to draw closer to God, seek guidance, and cultivate humility:
- James 4:8 — “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.”
- Isaiah 58:6 — Fasting as a way to bring spiritual breakthrough.
- Matthew 6:16–18 — Fasting with sincerity and devotion, not for show.
Over time, I also noticed physical benefits. Fasting helped me feel lighter, more disciplined, and aware of what I eat. It became a natural way to maintain health, practice prevention, and reduce dependency on medications in the long run.
Fasting Schedules You Can Try
Fasting doesn’t have to be extreme. Here are some schedules to explore:
1. Biblical / Spiritual Fasting
- Daniel Fast (21 Days) – Eat vegetables, fruits, nuts, and water only.
- Partial Fast (Esther Fast) – Avoid certain foods or meals for a few days.
- One Meal a Day (OMAD Spiritual) – Eat one simple meal and spend the rest of the day fasting and in prayer.
2. Intermittent / Physical Fasting
- 16/8 Method – Fast 16 hours daily, eat within an 8-hour window.
- 18/6 Method – Fast 18 hours daily, eat within a 6-hour window.
- 5:2 Method – Eat normally 5 days, restrict calories (~500–600) 2 days.
- Alternate-Day Fast – Eat normally one day, fast lightly or completely the next day.
3. Minimalist / Lifestyle Fasting
- Sunrise–Sunset Fast – Eat and drink only when the sun is down.
- One Meal a Day (OMAD Lifestyle) – Eat one meal a day; simple and disciplined.
- Weekly Fast – Pick one day per week to eat very lightly or fast.
As for me, I do OMAD. It aligns with my minimalist lifestyle, helps me focus on prayer and reflection, and keeps both my body and mind in balance.
Tips for Safe and Effective Fasting
- Stay hydrated (unless doing a strict spiritual fast).
- Listen to your body — start small and build up gradually.
- Combine fasting with prayer, meditation, or reflection.
- Consult a doctor if you have health concerns.
Lessons from 9 Years of Fasting
- Discipline builds confidence.
- Fasting clears the mind and strengthens spiritual focus.
- Prevention is better than cure — taking care of your body reduces future dependency on medications.
- Less is more — fewer meals, fewer distractions, more clarity and focus.
Fasting is not punishment. It is preparation — for a stronger body, a clearer mind, and a deeper walk with God.
Conclusion
Whether your goal is spiritual growth, physical health, or a minimalist lifestyle, fasting can be a powerful tool when done wisely. Start small, stay consistent, and listen to your body.
Nine years of practicing fasting have taught me one thing: fasting is not about deprivation. It’s about alignment — spirit, mind, and body working together.
