9 Years of Fasting: A Simple January–April Reset for Faith and Health
9 Years of Fasting: A Simple January–April Reset for Faith and Health
For the past nine years, from January to April, I have committed to fasting.
It’s not extreme.
It’s not trendy.
It’s not something I post about every day.
It’s simply a quiet, personal reset.
Over time, this seasonal practice has shaped not only my spiritual life, but also my mindset and approach to health.
Why I Started Fasting
I originally began fasting for spiritual reasons.
In the Bible, fasting is often connected to humility, prayer, and seeking God more deeply. In Gospel of Matthew 6:16–18, Jesus speaks about fasting with sincerity — not for attention, but for spiritual growth.
Another powerful passage is Book of Isaiah 58:6, which describes fasting as a way to bring spiritual breakthrough and freedom.
For me, fasting became a way to:
- Refocus on prayer
- Remove distractions
- Practice discipline
- Reset priorities
It taught me that less noise creates more clarity.
The Physical Lessons I Learned
While my goal was spiritual, I began noticing physical changes too.
I felt lighter.
More aware of what I was eating.
Less controlled by cravings.
Fasting helped me build discipline around food choices and portion control. It also encouraged me to think more about prevention rather than cure.
One of my biggest motivations is simple:
I want to take care of my body now so I can reduce my risk of depending on maintenance medications or frequent hospital visits later in life.
This is not about avoiding doctors. Medical professionals are important. But I believe prevention — through healthy habits — is powerful.
Research from organizations like the Mayo Clinic has explored the potential benefits of structured fasting approaches, including improved metabolic health when done properly and safely.
Of course, fasting is not for everyone. Anyone with medical conditions should consult a healthcare professional before starting.
Fasting and Minimalism
As someone who values minimalist living, fasting aligns naturally with my lifestyle.
Minimalism is not just about owning fewer things.
It’s about removing excess — in habits, in distractions, and sometimes even in diet.
From January to April each year, I simplify:
- My meals
- My schedule
- My digital consumption
- My distractions
And every year, I come out clearer.
What Nine Years Taught Me
Nine years of consistent fasting taught me:
- Discipline builds confidence.
- Prevention is easier than correction.
- Spiritual clarity affects physical habits.
- Consistency matters more than intensity.
Fasting is not punishment.
It is preparation.
Preparation for a stronger year.
Preparation for better decisions.
Preparation for long-term health.
If You’re Considering It
If you feel overwhelmed, unfocused, or physically sluggish, maybe it’s time for a reset.
Start small.
Be wise.
Listen to your body.
Seek guidance if needed.
You don’t need to do something extreme.
You just need consistency.
For me, January to April is my season of alignment — spirit, mind, and body.
And after nine years, I can confidently say:
Less truly creates space for more.
